In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, dwelt a boy named Shepherd. His existence was pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was to look after his herd of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind through the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his wards imbued in him a notion of tranquil contentment.

However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plot.

Stories of predators prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy decided to here leveraged this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but saw nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. But, one morning, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
